Guilherme Cavallaris passion for cycling first came to light in 1998, when he rode through the streets of London on his way to work. “In Brasil, cycling is stigmatized, because cars are still seen as status symbols. But in London I fell in love with the versatility a bike offers”.

The passion as such that six years later he returned to Europe, this time to take up cycling as a living: he became a courier in Berlin, in Germany. “During the week Id cycle on average 100km, and then at the weekend Id ride around visiting other cities”.

When he returned to Brasil he immediately tried to find cycling routes in São Paulo. Faced with a dearth of information, he had to pull his sleeves up, or rather, put his foot on the pedal, in order to map out for himself the states trails. Then, in 2001, he published the first ever guidebook devoted to cycling tours in Brasil.

Since then, the book has become increasingly popular, and every four months the cyclist launches a new edition of the Trail Guide enCYCLOpedia, always showcasing new routes. “São Paulo state is incredibly varied. You car ride 60km and come across small villages that look like theyre straight out of the 19th Century”. Below are some breath-taking routes recommended by Guilherme.

ROTEIRO SERRA DO MAR

Paraibuna – Natividade da Serra – São Luís do Paraitinga – Natividade da Serra

Youll spend the whole day riding, from 9am to 4pm, but its a very beautiful route. Youll get across coffee plantations dating back to the 18th and 19th Centuries. The trail is very picturesque, with streams, waterfalls and villages where you can drink sugar cane juice or eat corn pudding. Theres lots of plant life and crystal-clear rivers where you can go skinny-dipping. Its unbelievably cheap.

Journey: 159 km in 4 days
Cost per day: around £5 for accommodation and £5 for food
Physical Exertion: moderate

ROTEIRO SERRA DA MANTIQUEIRA

Joanópolis – Monte Verde – Gonçalves – São Francisco Xavier – Joanópolis

Its a very mountainous region, with peaks of up to two thousand metres. The route takes in four tourist cities, with hotels and restaurants. The surrounding woodland is always lush and full of wildlife: deer, snakes, monkeys, an infinite array of birds. And youll even have money to spare that you can spend in the towns. If you like mountains, Monte Verde is a must.

Journey: 200 km in 4 days
Cost per day: aorund £15 for accommodation and £15 for food
Physical Exertion: high, the track is bumpy

LITORAL SUL

Morretes (PR) – Iguape (SP)

The journey takes in historical buildings, like the fort on Ilha do Mel, which dates back to the 18th Century. This trip involves several small boat trips, which makes it different from the others. So make the most of the abundant water and swim a lot. Theres a big state park in the region, which contains two islands. To cross from one island to the other, youll have to travel in a fishing boat, which should cost around £3 or £5. Afterwards, youll travel on to Cananéia, crossing over from Ilha do Cardoso by ferry and then cycling up until Iguape, a beautiful 16th Century city.

Journey: 150 km in 4 days
Cost per day: £10 on accommodation and £10 on food
Physical Exertion: low
